Aerospace Doesn't Need Inconsistent Composites Quality [SAMPE Seattle 2017]

Ever since my childhood, I've been wildly fascinated by planes, rockets, and the very cool idea of deep space travel. Buzz Lightyear was my hero. As an adult, the idea of traveling to the stars has continued to intrigue me and has led me into a career focused in the aerospace industry. The Herculean effort required in order to accomplish such an engineering feat seems to becoming more and more of a reality.

Beyond funding, one of the countless important items that could hinder our progress of space exploration is the impact of inconsistent or poor composites quality.

Spotlight Series on Temperature Measurement

Since World War II, thermocouples have played a key role in the aerospace and aviation industries. From providing thermocouples that helped monitor the exhaust gas temperature of the “Flying Fortresses”, to supplying sensors that help monitor aircraft composites, to providing the sensors in astronaut power packs, our history in aerospace is a long one. At the heart of each of these applications is the need for reliability across a wide range of temperatures as well as accurate temperature monitoring.

As you approach higher and higher temperatures for your applications, it’s hard not to think of fiberglass insulated products. S-Glass and E-Glass, we refer to as Q-Glass and G-Glass respectively.  These braided products, come in many different variations depending on the use, not to mention there are also different saturants, grades of thermocouple, shields, and armors that can be applied over/to your wire or cable.
