On December 7^th, 2017 in Hartford, CT the Wire & Cable Manufacturers Alliance, Inc. (WCMA) announced at its annual meeting changes to its Board of Directors and Officers, making the upcoming April 7th, 2018 WCMA Distinguished Career Award a significant event for our organization. The TE Wire & Cable team would like to congratulate our very own Robert Canny on becoming President of the WCMA. Robert Canny is known by all who attend WCMA due to his engaging personality and endless stories spanning over 38 years in the aerospace wire and cable manufacturing. 

It has been a while since I posted a blog with some personal thoughts and experiences. For those of you that take the time to read them, thank you. To my loyal followers, leave a like, share, or maybe even provide your thoughts and comments. I welcome the exchange.

The last 12 months went by fast. I think it’s the first sign that I’m getting old. Around this time last year, I was getting ready to depart on my eight-week tour of aerospace customers in Europe. For some reason, I didn’t feel like a superstar while boarding the United Airlines flight to Amsterdam. After visiting over 200 cities in 15+ countries, I did learn a few lessons and made some new friends along the way.  

As a result of research conducted by the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge and tests conducted in the calibration laboratory at CCPI Europe Ltd., a new mineral insulated (MI) thermocouple cable has been developed for sensor manufacturing.

In the past year, I jotted down a number of wire and cable market trends that I’ve noticed. Let’s review a few recent trends and perhaps we can get a discussion going on how we all must evolve to become more dynamic businesses going forward. Some of these trends are general in nature and some are industry-specific, but relate in some way to the overall wire and cable market.

Spotlight Series on Temperature Measurement 

Since World War II, thermocouples have played a key role in the aerospace and aviation industries. From providing thermocouples that helped monitor the exhaust gas temperature of the “Flying Fortresses”, to supplying sensors that help monitor aircraft composites, to providing the sensors in astronaut power packs, our history in aerospace is a long one. At the heart of each of these applications is the need for reliability across a wide range of temperatures as well as accurate temperature monitoring.
