Many of us start out the year with grand plans and positive resolutions to change or improve something in our lives, be it personal, professional or both. Ironically, January 17th, otherwise known as “Ditch New Year's Resolution Day” is gaining popularity. Sad but true. It’s the day when many people abandon their New Year's resolutions.

After much preparation and hard work, our Calibration Laboratory's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation has been successfully reaffirmed after passing the latest assessment conducted by a third party auditor A2LA (American Association of Laboratory Accreditation), and was completed on October 21st, 2016. Today, our company's accreditation is upheld by TE Wires high quality standards and enforced by our Quality Control department. The annual inter-laboratory proficiency testing was conducted by the National Association for Proficiency Testing (NAPT), which included TE Wire & Cable. As noted in a final issued report from 12/13/16, the results were satisfactory.

Are you in the aviation/aerospace market? Do you manufacture aerospace composites?
Then no doubt you are aware that CAMX 2016 is right around the corner. The exhibition booth spaces have been sold out for months. It helps that a well-known Mickey Mouse operation is located next door. I may even visit Disney’s California Adventure Park myself.

In all our years of experience with aviation and aerospace composites manufacturers, there is one overriding truth: Thermocouple failure during autoclave composites curing and the parts waste that results is NOT an option. The secrets to achieving zero failures are outlined in the following infographic.

No question about it: 2015 has been a very busy year for aerospace composites manufacturers. We have every indication that we'll all be even busier in 2016. In my travels all over the globe, many of the challenges that composites manufacturers face have proven to be universal. Top of the list are improving quality and reducing waste, both of which are extremely important to building a more robust and profitable bottom line.

Yesterday, I attended the 10th Annual Wasatch Front Materials Expo (that’s WFME for you acronym lovers). This was my first visit to the SAMPE Utah chapter’s show, which is a four-hour blitz of an event.
I enjoy the more intimate aspects of these smaller shows. The exhibitors have small, simple table top displays. Although it’s only a few hours long, it seems like you have more time for one-on-one conversation with attendees. As always, it’s interesting to rub shoulders with the various exhibitors and attendees, swap war stories and share tips and tricks. (More on that in another post.)

A few years ago, companies doing aerospace profiles and extrusions followed their internal procedures, with no industry standards to drive quality assurance. In many cases, aluminum heat treatment processes only required air temperature measurement with stationary thermocouples (TCs). These stationary TC wires were rarely checked for their calibration and were only replaced when not functioning.
