I miss David Letterman. I actually missed Letterman even when he was doing his last shows on the air. The Letterman I miss was the one who threw weird objects off the roofs of tall buildings, just to see what would happen to them when they hit the ground. You name it, he tossed it. Watermelons, cans full of paint, TVs—anything that was breakable and made a big mess was fair game. I loved it. I can’t help it; I’m filled with a kid’s curiosity and inventiveness. I was the kind of boy who, when I was given a toy in a box, threw the toy aside and played with the box.

4 Ways Thermocouple Wire Vendors Build Value, Long Term Relationships

In all aspects of our lives, personal and professional, each of us strives to build valuable, lasting  relationships and the building process continues through the course of our entire life. The topic on building business relationships came to me this past weekend when I got the sudden and inexplicable urge to revisit some old marketing articles from my MBA marketing class. In particular, I dove into materials on innovation as well as risk and reward management of new product portfolios.  Since I'm now more immersed into my marketing role and working with new thermocouple wire and cable product ideas, it seemed like a  progressive and productive thing to do on a weekend where the weather, quite frankly, wasn’t my definition of springtime.

There's no getting around it: Baltimore has taken a serious publicity hit in the news recently. Unless you've been hiking in the Outback or hiding under a rock, the rioting and unrest of the past few days has finally settled down. The curfew is lifted and the kids are back to school. Thankfully.

For those of us in the aviation and aerospace composites industry, we're looking forward to visiting Baltimore for a very different reason: SAMPE Baltimore 2015. Rest assured, SAMPE organizeers are working closely with Baltimore officials & CVB to ensure a safe experience for SAMPE Baltimore attendees.

I must admit, Pat Durkin has some great stories to tell. That's the way it is when you're on the road as much as we are. And I'm sure my fellow globe-trotting associate will admit that as we travel the world sharing our autoclave curing experience with composites manufacturers, we both have a love/hate relationship with travel. But we do it for very good reasons.

Understanding Noise Levels and Installation Considerations

In part one, we discussed the four types of noise frequently found in instrumentation circuits (i.e., Common Mode, Cross Talk, Static and Magnetic) as well as the methods used to correct the problems they cause.

Next, we discuss the types of noise levels found in various environments and some installation considerations that will help you mitigate or completely eliminate the noise problems.

Attention Composites Manufacturers: How much is your TIME worth?

Yesterday, I attended the 10th Annual Wasatch Front Materials Expo (that’s WFME for you acronym lovers). This was my first visit to the SAMPE Utah chapter’s show, which is a four-hour blitz of an event.

I enjoy the more intimate aspects of these smaller shows. The exhibitors have small, simple table top displays. Although it’s only a few hours long, it seems like you have more time for one-on-one conversation with attendees. As always, it’s interesting to rub shoulders with the various exhibitors and attendees, swap war stories and share tips and tricks. (More on that in another post.)

4 Common Sources of Noise that Affect Instrumentation Circuits

It can be a real challenge to select the right thermocouple wire. You not only have to determine the type of thermocouple elements to use, but also the temperature range, calibration accuracy and insulation type  for your application. With thousands of different configurations, it’s still far less complicated than thermocouple and instrumentation cable circuits. Regardless, it is important to know how to control noise in instrumentation circuits.

Thermocouple (TC) wires are used in a wide range of industries. I have personally worked on some unique projects and it always amazes me how innovative people get especially in the niche applications. For example, one well known aerospace company is designing cryogenic temperature monitoring system utilizing thermocouple wire in space satellites. Cool stuff. Literally.
