Happy World Metrology Day!

Today May 20, 2020 is World Metrology Day. It commemorates the day of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875 which marked the inception of international metrological collaboration. We use today as time to remember why metrology is so vastly important to the world. Without metrology and an organized global measurement system, the modern world as we know it would not exist. From planes and cars to sensors and just about anything that would require measurement, we would be amiss to not recognize the importance of such work and its impact on our day to day lives.

Optimizing Temperature Measurement in Heat Treatment Operations

Specifying Thermocouple Wire, Extensions, and Thermocouples

Quality and efficiency in heat-treatment operations requires accurate temperature measurement. Specifying thermocouple wire and thermocouples carefully will lead to greater temperature measurement accuracy and less scrap or re-work.

First, consider whether the need is for thermocouple cable or for thermocouple extension cable. Thermocouple cable is made to survive inside the furnace and may be used to form the measuring junction or “hot junction.” It requires insulation and jacketing material that can withstand the process temperatures. It must be used where the temperatures are extreme.

To twist or not to twist that is the question!

Recently, I received a number of questions regarding junctions. Most of the questions are related to the effect of twisted vs. parallel junctions on measurement and performance long term.  To answer this question, I approached my friend and colleague at CCPI, Trevor Ford.

Below are some of the questions he answered in his reply. I hope they help you on your next project or simply answer some of the basic questions you might have while working with thermocouples.

Trevor, using your vast thermocouple sensing expertise, would you be able to provide some pros and cons of twisted (weld/no weld)/parallel welded exposed junctions?

What products and services does TE Wire & Cable offer?

TE Wire has been known as a master of temperature sensing and specialty wire and cable since it was first founded in 1941 during WWII. We participate in three main areas of wire and cable: aerospace/composite, OEM, and metallurgy. TE Wire & Cable maintains an in-house laboratory directly certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) allowing it to calibrate its own wire, which, in turn provides a higher quality product with lower cost and improved efficiency. TE Wire is a Marmon Wire & Cable/Berkshire Hathaway company.
